    A friend of mine asked how to get a cent sign (), so without explaining the technical reasons for *why* any of this is the way it is, here is my explanation.

    To get a cent sign (): hold down the alt key (next to the space bar) and at the same time, type 0162 on the number pad (alt+0162). When you release the alt key (after hitting 2), the cent sign should appear.

    Another way (a more generic way for future missing characters) is to go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Character Map. This will open a box with a lot of letters. Find the letter you are looking for (in this case, the ) and double click on it. It will now be found in the box below that is labelled "Characters to copy." Click on the "copy" button, and then you can paste it into whatever program you are needing a .
