|I think this is the first job I've had where I felt guilty for being paid because there was too much down time. Okay, not *guilty*, per se, but it definitely feels weird. Now that I stop to think about it, though, I always felt a little awkward when I didn't have something to be working on. I wasn't specifically bothered when I was a TA, because I'm so used to TA's getting paid just for being available at extended hours. On the other hand, I always felt like I should be *doing* something when I worked at the gas station.
This is *definitely* the first job where I had to restrain myself from trying to bring work home. I'm working on a grade calculator, and I'm only about half way done with it. As I usually get while I"m in the middle of a big programming spree, I didn't want to stop to do anything else. Usually, this means that I stay up all night and work on it until it's completed to a functional (albeit not always pretty) state. Because I'm an hourly employee, I'm not technically supposed to be working on work projects off the clock. So while it would be extremely easy to bring my work home, I don't.
It's a huge hassle to have to set up the computerhow i like it five or six times because the settings are not saved on the network, and there are 5 or 6 different computers that I get put on. On the other hand, the process for development is so simplified. I actually get to use all the latest software. I had to make a change to a picture, and I opened *PhotoShop*. Not some freeware imaging tool, but the real thing. And it was done in no time at all because of the ease of copying and pasting *and* pixel-by-pixel control. I'm not yet overly impressed with DreamWeaver MX 2004 compared with MX, but I have full access to the entire Macromedia Studio MX 2004. I don't have to upload files anymore, because the development server is on the same network as me, so I just save my work to a network drive and hit refresh on the browser. Instant gratification.
And I like when I get to help somebody with computer problems. Even if it's just as simply as pointing them to the right website. I spent a lot of time today talking with rather frustrating customers that made mom look like a computer whiz, but all-in-all, the tech support side of it is very enjoyable.
Then there's the people that I work with. ALl great guys. And the computer literature available. I think that if I need a reference manual for any web technology, it's accessible somewhere in the office.
I hope that this isn't just a honeymoon phase. I hope that this job really is as amazing as what it feels right now.
