Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

I'll be honest - I don't understand all the implications of the Gunpowder Plot. Basically, the message that I take away from most discussions is that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. One side celebrates the day as a great victory over the plotters that attempted to assassinate the King. The other side celebrates the impact that a single person can have in fighting for a cause. Most people simply enjoy the fireworks.

Tomorrow I plan on watching V for Vendetta. I'm really not one to jump at conspiracy theories. I still don't think that the World Trade Center attack was a government conspiracy. I don't think that the FDA is out to get us all. But I do see the approaching totalitarian government and I dread it. Some of the conspiracy theorists are starting to question if Bush will try to cancel the 2008 election. I, for one, don't believe that even Bush is that stupid. So Bush is gone at the end of next year, but what legacy does he leave?

The presidency has grown too powerful and the American people have become too compliant with the formation of a police state. We simply accept that "terrorists" should be tortured and locked away without trial. National opinion is being swayed to believe that Iran is the new threat that must be bombed (it's okay, though, because we've always been at war with Eastasia). It has become natural that our communications should be monitored and our travels should be logged in the name of Homeland Security.
