Optimizing a Fractal
added Wed December 29 2004 at 12:00 AM
Several disclaimers first. First of all, there's probably going to be a few typos in this entry, because I'm laying here with my eyes closed listening to music. Second, I know it's been forever (over a month?) since I've written. I may or may not explain details of what's been going on in the past month later. Knowing my past, I probably won't. For now, suffice it to say that I've been busy.

It's late. My computer was acting up earlier this evening and I shut it down to watch a movie with Mom and Dad (I'm at home). I came back and started a virus scan to see if anything turned up there (it just finished and nothing did). Next I'll defrag my hard drive next. At any rate, I figured I'd toss up a few words as long as I'm thinking about it. Not that a day has gone by where I didn't think "I should write something today."

One of the things I've been working on is this program. It creates and displays a Newton-Raphson fractal and allows interaction with it (currently ust zooming in and out and moving around, eventually setting the functions and colors and such). Right now, the code is a huge mess of write/debug/write/debug with too little planning. I'm not sure if the problems that I have encountered could have been prevented with a little more planning, but I'll probably make a 2.0 version with a complete re-write of the code sometime in the next couple months.

BTW, in case you didn't get the official announcement (which means you've never mailed me at my gmail account), I'm moving to Connecticut in the next week or so. I got an internship with Pratt and Whitney (they're the ones who were funding my research assistant position before). I will be there for 8 months before returning to BYU to finish my last year of my undergraduate experience.
